Because I don't eat a lot of sugar, sweet things taste sweeter to me. Because I am not always drenching my taste buds in fructose, sucrose, etc. my sense of taste has changed, if not improved. On Monday I ate an apple. Sorry to say that I inadvertently left it off my tweets, but that is another matter for another time.
The apple was possibly the best apple I have ever eaten. It was from New Zealand. It had a micro sticker on it that said "Jazz." It was reddish/yellowish autumn color. It was big and slightly crunchy. That was one damn fine apple.
How much of my epicurean delight was attributable to the flavor of the apple and how much was attributable to my changing taste is hard to say. But because I do eat candy and doughnuts and ice cream, my taste for sweetness has been sharpened. I enjoy a good apple as much as I once enjoyed a cherry cheesecake. Salads are something I look forward to as much as I once looked forward to Hagen Daz. I don't miss the mega-doses of sugar.
Yes, I do look forward to that day when i can enjoy starches and desserts in moderation. But that's at least 40 pounds from now. In the meantime, I am usually content. If I eat sufficient protein, I do not crave coffee rolls and pastries and and things that melt in the mouth. But I am thinking about that next killer apple.
