Restating My Objectives On Day 12

1. Maintain supplement compliance, especially HCG drops twice/day. HCG is the most important aspect of this diet.

2. Restrict fat. Without fat restriction, HCG drops do not cause weight loss.

All else is of lesser importance.

3. Restrict carbohydrates.

4. Restrict calories.

In addition to the weight loss via GHC and fat-restriction, I also hope to restrict carbohydrates to the point of inducing ketosis and shed some poundage using that method as well.

Restricting carbohydrates are much more important than restricting overall calories.The key is lean protein. Protein digests slowly and the energy provided lasts longer than say, a spoonful of sugar.

Weight loss supplements in addition to HCG.

1. Garcinia cambogia. The primary benefit is that it supposable prevents carbohydrates from converting to fat in one's body. I might be throwing my money away because I am already restricting carbohydrates. I am told that gc also decreases appetite.

2. Berberine. This supplement regulates blood sugar and can promote weight loss by itself, although the results are not that dramatic. I saw a study cited where the experimental subjects lost 5 lb. in 12 weeks. Joy. I put on 15 pounds taking it sporadically.

Appetite suppressants:

1. Hoodia.

2. Caralluma fimbriata.

3. Cocoa

4. Cinnamon.

Nutrients that are mildly appetite suppressing but which I take for other reasons and consume all the time even when I am not on a formal diet.

1. L-phenylalanine.

2. Arginine.

Additional nutrients that I consume daily:

1. Magnesium (to control muscle cramps.)

2. Potassium. Originally taken to control muscle cramps. Not always effective so I added magnesium to my regimen. I might discontiue its usage at the conclusion of the 30 Day Diet.

3. Multivitamin mixtures. I try to consume after every meal and before bedtime.

4. Calcium ascorbate.

5. Aspirin 325 mg.

Compliance strategy.

1. As much as possible, I try to maintain a consistent schedule. Work often intrudes on those efforts. Generally, I eat at 1 PM, 7 PM and 1 PM. On weekends, I might only eat twice/day.

2. I bought a day planner to arrange my many pills. This has been promoted a consistency that was lacking when I fished through four or five jars five times a day.

3. I make consistent use of my food scale.

4. I have become disciplined at writing down every morsel in a notepad either before or after eating.I learned that a food journal is much like a dream journal in that my memory fades quickly on details if not recorded immediately.

That is an overall summary of my 30 Day Diet.So far, so good.


Food Log: Day 12

AM Weight: 223 lb.

8:55 AM: HCG Drops

Cold, black coffee throughout AM and PM.

11:45 AM: 1 tablespoon phenylalanine.

Ketosis at 11:47 AM: At least 4.

1:50 PM: 18 oz. shrimp with 1/4 cup cocktail sauce,  6 oz. celery, 5 oz. kimchi.
                garcinia cambogia, berberine, hoodia, 4 grams calcium ascorbate, multivitamin. I also took my AM supplements at this time: aspirin, calcium, potassium.

4:30 PM: 3 tablespoons of arginine mix.

8:20 PM: 1/3 cup plain, whole milk yogurt, 1/4 apple, tablespoon cocoa, tablespoon cinnamon.

11:50 PM: 10 ox. Black Forest turkey breast with 1 teaspoon wasabi sauce (So tired of mustard) 5 oz. radishes, 2 oz. kimchi, (I  absentmindedly skipped the garcinia cambogia and berberine. I will write elsewhere about the effects of caloric restriction on cognition and mental alertness.) Calcium ascorbate, multivitamin, magnesium, potassium. I also skipped the carallum fimbriata because it is an appetite suppressant and bedtime is right around the corner. Also took my standard 6 mg. melatonin at the completion of dinner.

12:35 AM: HCG drops.

12:45 AM: Double dose of diphenhydramine (50 mg. instead of standard 25 mg.)

Steps for April 30, 2017: 1,393. 0.36 miles. Usual disclaimer. This was a Sunday and I don't keep my phone in my pockets on the weekend.

A food I will enjoy at the conclusion of the 30 Day Diet: Roasted and salted macadamia nuts.

Ketosis around 10 AM: Circa 1.0

Cold, black coffee throughout AM and PM

11:30 AM: 1 tablespoon phenylalanine.

4:10 PM: 9 oz. turkey, 4.5 oz. celery, 4 oz. kimchi.
                Took AM meds at this time: magnesium, potassium. I seem to have forgotten the aspirin. Multivitamin, 4 grams calcium ascorbate. (Skipped cinnamon and cocoa.)

9:30 PM: 8 oz. tofu noodles, 3/4 cup salsa, 3 oz. kimchi, Skipped cinnamon, cocoa. Garcinia cambogia, berberine, caralluma fimbriata. Also forgot the calcium ascorbate but I took a multivitamin. I decided to take the bedtime magnesium and calcium at this time as well.

11:32 PM: HCG drops.

Ketosis at 12:10 AM; At least 4.

I only ate two meals and at bedtime I was slightly hungry. So...
1:30 AM: 1 tablespoon cocoa, 1 tablespoon cinnamon.

Steps for April 29: 1,098. .26 miles. That figure might be a little light because I don't carry my cell phone with me around the house.

Allergies, Kimchi And Me

Two years ago I had my first ever allergic reaction. I had taken precautions to avoid a cold or flu all season and then in April, I got a bad case of sneezes and sniffles.

My chiropractor, Dr. Scott, recommended probiotics. It sounded wacky to me, that one's breathing is affected by the bacteria in one's gut, however, I was willing to give his suggestions a try.

Dr. Scott specifically recommended adding either unpasteurized sauerkraut or kimchi to my diet. I would do so, after first finding almost immediate relief from GNC probiotics. As the allergies improved, I usually discontinued the sauerkraut or kimchi. I like sauerkraut, but not served cold and cooking it destroys its probiotics. I like Kimchi but it is something I can take or leave and each time my allergies improved, I stopped eating and buying Kimchi.

Most of this week I have had some allergic reactions, mostly just coughing. Yesterday (Friday, April 28)  my allergies were at an all-time high, putting me at an all time low. Continuous sneezing and runny nose but worse yet, the fatigue that comes from insufficient oxygen. Earlier in the week--Tuesday-- my goto grocery store had no Kimchi on the shelf. This was also the situation on Friday but I asked one of the green-smocked produce guys for assistance. With his assistance, I was able to procure a jar of mild and a jar of spicy kimchi. I consumed two 4 oz. servings later that day (see food log.)

This has thrown my routine off. I slept late and as of this writing (2:57 PM), I have consumed only HCG drops and a tablespoon of phenylalanine. The sneezing and sniffles have subsided but I still cough a bit and I do no feel energetic. A low-fat or low-calorie diet can also bring about some lethargy so I don't need anything else to compound my fatigue.

11:30 AM: 1 tablespoon phenylalanine.

1 PM: 1 lb. shrimp with 1/4 cup cocktail suace, 4 oz. kimchi.
            Note: I was going to use both cocktail sauce and salsa bu the two sauces tasted bad in combination so I threww the slasa away.)
            Took AM supplements at this time: Magnesium, potassium, aspirin as well as garcinia cambogia, berberine, hoodia, calcium ascorbate, multivitamin.

Diet cola in PM for caffeine.

9 PM: 5 oz. chunk lite tuna with 5.4 oz. Bumble Bee Thai tuna.

Around 10:30 PM: 3 tablespoons arginine mix.

12:15 AM: HCG drops.

12:30 AM: 8 oz. tofu noodles with approximately 1/4 cup salsa, 4 oz. kimchi. tablespoon cocoa, tablespoon cinnamon.
Magnesium, potassium, multivitamin, calcium ascorbate, melatonin, diphenhydramine.

Steps for April 28: 3,537. 1.1 miles.

                 berberine, hoodia, multivamin, calcium ascorbate ( I forgot that arrived yesterday)

Diet cola in PM for caffeine.

8 PM: 10 oz. Black Forest Turkey.
           Garcinia cambogia, berberine, carullama fimbriata.

10 PM 3 tablespoons arginine mix.


12:05 AM: HCG drops.

12:30 AM: Honeycrisp apple.

1 AM: 10 oz. ham with mustard, large serving of boiled baby spinach with malt vinegar, 4 oz. asparagus, 1/3 cup plain, whole milk yogurt (1.5 gram of fat,) 5 pretzels, tablespoon cocoa, tablespoon cinnamon.

Steps for April 27: 3,265. 1 mile.

2 AM: Ketosis 1.25 to 1.5

6 AM: Ketosis negative.


A food I will enjoy at the conclusion of the 30 day diet: Hormel tamales that happen to be on my shelf, lots and lots of Doritos with cheese sauce.

Ketosis reading at about 11:45...1.25 to 1.50 (Remind me to look up the meanings of those levels later.)

12 Noon: 1 lb. cooked shrimp (with tails), 2.5 oz. radishes, 2.5 oz. kimchi, 6 oz. celery, tablespoon cocoa*,tablespoon cinnamon.
Took AM supplements, as well as lunchtime supplements with meal.
1 tablespoon phenylalanine, magnesium, potassium, aspirin, garcinia cambogia, berberine, hoodia, multivitamin.

Note: In additiion to slight dizziness, I had some upper GI indigestion. I think it's because I took the phenylalanine with food. This has not always been a problem but not all l-phenylalanine is created equal. I always buy bulk powders because it is cheaper than pill or capsule or tablet. Some mixtures are more soluble than others. The current brand that I use is priced right but it is very granular and does not dissolve so easily. I suspect this might contribute to occasional upper GI distress.

Between 1:30 and 2:30 I consumed 4 antacids.

3:22 PM: 1 large strawberry.

3:27 PM: 1 large strawberry (encore.)

Diet cola throughout evening for caffeine.

10 PM: 10 oz.turkey breast, tablespoon cinnamon, tablespoon cocoa.
             Garcinia cambogia, berberine, caralluma fimbriata.

12:05 AM: HCG Drops.

12:15 AM: 3 tablespoons arginine mix.

Around 1 AM, I consumed my sleep meds (6 mg. melatonin, 25 mg. diphenhydramine) as well as a multivitamin, magnesium and potassium. I held off on garcinia cambogia and berberine as I was not eating a "meal." The astute observer will notice that I only ate twice in the day (not counting the 2 strawberries or the 4 antacids) and although I was not feeling hungry in the loud sense of the term (HCG and more specifically, hoodia and caralluma fimbriata suppress hunger signals) I felt in need of some sustenance. As well, I realize one can burn calories faster by consuming a small amount of food as opposed to total deprivation.

So between 1 AM and 2 AM I ate a honey crisp apple, a cup of whole milk, unflavored yogurt and seven pretzels. I then swallowed a tablespoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon of cocoa and went to bed.

At 2 AM my ketosis was  between 1.25 and 1.50.

At 4 AM my ketosis was negative.

Circa 7:20 AM my ketosis was near 1.25.

About the yogurt: I probably ate the cup because I hate to throw out food and it would not survive the end of the diet. Though touted as a health food, pasteurized yogurt is really just pudding that tastes funny. Even with active yogurt cultures, it is questionable just how healthful yogurt might be. There are probably better sources of probiotics than yogurt.

At 4.5 grams of fat and 14 grams of carbohydrate per serving, plain, non-fat yogurt has two much fat for an HCG diet and it pushes the carb limit on any Atkinsesque diet. But it was good! Deprived of sweets for a week, my taste buds are already adjusting. The yogurt tasted like Haagen Dazs. It was all I could do to keep from eating the remaining three servings left in the fridge.

I should also say that the apple I ate was one of the tastiest culinary experiences I have ever enjoyed. Even celery now tastes sweet! Something to be said for occasional deprivation.

I do feel slightly better, downright normal, after eating that cup of yogurt. I will address our multiple and redundant hunger signals in the future.





*I decided to continue with the cocoa for now. I felt a little lightheaded (2 or 3 out of 10) and suspected low blood sugar. Cocoa can help lift blood sugar levels a little bit as can cinnamon.

10:32 AM: Tablespoon phenylalanine.

11;48 AM: 1 oz. kimchi (fermented cabbage.)

1:33 PM: 9 oz. roast turkey breast with mustard, 5 oz. celery, 3 oz. radishes, 2 oz. kimchi, 2 pretzels, tablespoon cocoa, tablespoon cinnamon, more black coffee.
Garcinia cambogia, berberine, hoodia, multivitamin.

2:32 PM: teaspoon calcium ascorbate (it arrived from Amazon today.)

Note: Ketosis at 2:35 PM: 2.25 to 2.50 (Not sure what those numbers mean but ketosis is underway.)

Note: Drug store readings around 4:30 PM: Blood pressure 117/76. Pulse 63 bpm.

5 PM: 4 tablespoons arginine mix.

9:45 PM: 10 oz. Black Forest turkey breast, tablespoon cinnamon, tablespoon cocoa (I will probably discontinue cocoa after this. Need to cut fat wherever I can, including the .5 grams or 4-5 calories.)

1:25 AM: 5 oz. chunk lite tuna packed in water mixed with 2.7 oz. Bumble Bee Thai packet tuna, 5 pretzels.

Note: Before bed I was experiencing muscle cramps so I took another magnesium, another potassium, 2 ibuprofen, 3 multivtamins (I am currently taking a lightweight Walgreens multivitamin instead of my preferred Personal Radical Shield--hope it arrives in the mail soon--so I don't think I will OD on vitamins with my current mix.)

Day 4 Food Log

AM Weight: 230 lb.

8:20 AM HCG drops.

Note: I got thrown off schedule by my late night encounter with the medical establishment. I woke up around eleven, drank black coffee, swallowed my potassium and magnesium and headed to the hospital to see my lady. Because I was rushed and slightly out of kilter, I forgot to take my AM phenylalanine.

The quaint town where I diet is in the process of repairing a water main within the heart of the metropolis and the city fathers have created a maze of detours. What would usually have been a five-minute drive turned into a much longer and slower process. I stopped off at Walgreens to get my lady some cookies. The delays would have put me behind schedule had I been on a schedule. Instead, it just put me behind.

The patient in question would be sleeping when I returned so I went to a shop and killed some time. Not growing up with a cell phone in my hand, I still marvel at the convenience the gadget provides, Google Latitude notwithstanding. Ms. D. called me and I hiked back to her hospital room.

I was finally able to eat at 4;30 PM. I consumed 16 oz. of  Nasoya Pasta Zero Shirataki Spaghetti. I will probably discuss this food item at a later date though I am still unsure if I will ever eat it again. 1 lb. serving provides 60 calories and 16 grams of carbohydrate.
With the spaghetti, I had a cup of Market Basket Tomato and Basil sauce. 26 grams of carbohydrate, 4 grams of fat.
Still feeling hungry, I ate 4.5 oz. roasted turkey breast with mustard.
I took garcinia cambogia, berberine and hoodia with dinner. The hoodia is working well. As of 10:27 PM, I am experiencing zero hunger, albeit I keep thinking about food.

PM: In the evening I sipped cold black coffee.

12 Midnight: Garcinia cambogia

12:30 AM: 11 oz. roasted turkey breast, 7 oz. radishes, 5 oz. celery
                    Caralluma fimbriata, berberine,
                    Magnesium, multivitamin, melatonin, dephenhydramine.

1:45 AM: HCG drops. (Almost forgot the cornerstone of this diet.)

I failed to schedule my arginine. Also, I skipped on cinnamon and cocoa, two appetite suppressants because I was not hungry.

A food I will consume shortly after the conclusion of the 30 day diet: A big bag of Fritos.

Day 4....April 22, 2017...230 lb. Actually, the needle did repeatedly go to the left of 230 but not every single time I restepped onto the scales. Also, I could twist and wiggle and get it below 230 but that's not really sporting.

Note: Work was aunusually busy and I did not eat dinner until 10 PM and I delayed taking my arginine supplement until I arrived home (Of course that would later be missed once again due to our visit to the ER. So I missed out on arginine for the day.)

12 Midnight: HCG drops.

Note: shortly after midnight I took my significant other to the emergency department. They would admit her to their snazzy, attached hospital. Serious but not life threatening. I returned home around 3:30 AM and ate 5 oz. smoked turkey breast with mustard at 3:45 AM.

I took magnesium and a Walgreen's multivitamin. Due to poor planning, I have run out of my preferred brand, Radical Shield from Life Enhancement.

Due to the fact that I was excessively sleepy, I skipped the melatonin and diphenhydramine.

Lesson: Emergencies do not take a holiday and they do not respect your weight loss programs.

Also, due to the change of schedule, I missed my arginine supplement that is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach.

1 PM: 5 oz. turkey with mustard, 4.5 oz. roast beef (96% fat free per label. Approximately 7.5 oz. fat) with mustard. Berberine. Multivitamin. Hoodia.

PM:Diet soda for caffeine.

9 PM: 10 oz. Bumble Bee Thai tuna in pouches.
           Note: Bad planning on my part. I did not remember that each pouch contains 8 grams of           carbohydrate. I want to stay on both a low-fat and low-carbohydrate plan. Poor planning on my part. I exceeded the carb limit for the day. Realizing my mistake, I decided to treat myself to an oz. of pretzels.

My first meal at conclusion of 30 day diet: Corned beef with cabbage, potatoes and barley. I bought some corned beef roasts when they were on sale in March and they have a long shelf life. Good until June.

Note: I did not overload on water prior to initial weigh-in but Easter was April 16 and I ate well all weekend all the way through Tuesday (Day 0...April 18, 2017). There was probably five or six pounds of temporary weight gain and I suspect that that will be reflected in an initial, front-ended weight loss.

30 Day Diet Coming Soon

I know how to gain weight. I know how to lose weight. I have yet figured out how to maintain a given weight.

I went from 215 to 220 and hovered there for a few months. Then I went over 230 and continue to creep.

I cannot fit into my size 38 pants. Size 40 are also getting tight. Still have some 42's I have neglected to give away (but need to.)

I hope to lose at least 20 lb.on this Mother Of All Diets! Details to follow.

April Update

My weight fluctuates between 225 and 230. I take berberine but only sporadically. I need to be more diligent in compliance.

I can gain weight and I can lose weight but I find it hard to maintain any given weight for any length of time.

Sometime soon, I hope to launch an intensive thirty day diet. Stay tuned.
