Treadmill Exercise Guidelines

Exercise guidelines
As with anything else in life, you get the most enjoyment and benefit out of the activities that you perform properly. Treadmill exercise is no exception. According to the American College of Sports Medicine:

•Before you get on the treadmill, make sure you know how to work all the controls, such as speeding up, slowing down, changing the incline and emergency off.
•Use correct posture when walking, with shoulders back, head and chin up and slightly forward, and tighten your abdominal muscles. Look forward, not down.
•Use the same stride you normally use when walking.
•Stay in position - don't go off to the side or the back.
•Try to use your treadmill at the same time of day for a certain amount of minutes and make it part of your daily routine.

Weekly weigh in.

On Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, I weighed 240 pounds. Dreaded snag!

Food Log: August 29, 2009

Thursday August 27: As mentioned, I had a mini-illness on Thursday. Woke up with headache and nausea. Took two ibuprofen and later took three aspirin. Nausea caused a lack of appetite. I got lightheaded from not eating but by early evening the nausea had run its course and I was hungry with a capital H. I went on a feeding frenzy. I ate 3 creamsicles, a couple of nectarines, a banana, potato chips, fritos, a 2,5 oz bag of pretzels, a couple of chunks of ginger root.

The pretzels are interesting. I have heard people tout soda crackers for an upset stomach but that never worked for me. Pretzels work miracles for my stomach. They are similar in composition to soda crackers but they work better. The ginger root helped my nausea but not like the pretzels did. I made the decision to go off-diet to relieve the nausea. It succeeded and the feeding frenzy began.

Friday August 28: I started the eating with approximately 1.5 lb shrimp with butter. In the evening I ate 3 pork chops. I took 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix around midnight and ate 4 hardboiled eggs at around 2 AM.

Saturday August 29: I took 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix in early afternoon. I ate 24 oz. of beef franks at 5PM. I ate 3/4 Cornish Hen at 11PM.

Sunday August 30: 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix before going to the gym. I ate 3 pork chops at 5PM. I ate 2 more pork chops with a micro salad at 10:30PM. At 2AM I ate approximately .5 lb. shrimp with butter and a handful of pecans.

Monday August 31: Ate two porks chops around 12:30PM. I ate approximately 1 oz. whole sunflower seeds from 2PM to 3PM. I consumed 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix at 5PM. I ate three chicken thighs at 8:30. Maybe another oz. whole sunflower seeds from 11Pm to midnight.

Benefits of Treadmill

Are excuses holding you back from getting into shape? Are you too busy with work and family? Is the weather a problem? Treadmill exercise may be just the thing that wipes out your excuses and puts you on the road to good health and fitness.

With a treadmill, even excuses about being uncoordinated fly out of the window because the only sporty skill you need is something you already do all day long -- walk. The weather isn't a problem and neither is boredom. Place your treadmill in your home, perhaps in front of the television or a picture window, and put on those walking shoes.

What is treadmill exercise?
A treadmill is a machine that essentially allows you to walk or jog "in place." One of the best reasons to take your walking program inside is because on a treadmill you can maintain the pace of your stride easily. Plus, you can get the benefits of aerobic exercise without leaving your home.

Advantages of treadmill exercise
While there are many indoor exercise machines on the market, few compare to treadmills when it comes to health benefits and burning calories, an essential part of losing weight and getting in shape. In one study, treadmills easily outpaced an exercise bicycle, a rowing machine and a cross-country skiing machine.

A group of volunteers at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Hospital did a series of workouts on different machines, each time exercising at what felt like the same intensity. Researchers used a special device to measure the number of calories burned. The treadmill allowed the individuals to burn up to 200 calories per hour more than the bicycle ergometer, which had the lowest energy expenditure, said the researchers.

The average medium-intensity treadmill workout burned 700 calories per hour, compared to just 500 calories per hour on the exercise bike. One reason for the difference is the amount of muscle mass that is used in both exercises.

Burning calories is a great benefit of treadmill exercise, but it's not the only reason to consider this type of workout. Walking is an excellent form of exercise for people with certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis, hypertension and back pain. For these, as well as those of us who aren't crazy about going to a gym, the flexibility of a treadmill can be very exciting. Further, a treadmill adds consistency to your walking workout because many models allow you to maintain speed and intensity throughout your entire workout.

According to research conducted by the Harvard Medical School, walking 45 minutes five times a week can cut your chances of getting a flu or cold in half.

Also, while some aerobic activities can be risky during pregnancy, walking has many benefits. Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy can loosen ligaments. Walking helps to tone muscles and strengthen joints that support a growing baby.

Treadmills have numerous features that allow you, for instance, to change the MPH or elevate the grade. Further, most models have options to determine calories burned, time elapsed and distance traveled.

An adequate display panel allows you to keep track of workouts (e.g. time and MPH), which in turn allows you to easily monitor progress.

Finally, if you are just looking to get in shape, walking or jogging on a treadmill improves muscle tone all over your body. Strengthened muscles means the heart can pump more oxygen-rich blood with each step you take.

Food Log August 27, 2009

Sunday August 23: About a pound of shrimp with butter at 2PM. Consumed 6 tbsp. of proprietary arginine mix at about 5 PM. Around midnight I ate approximately 1.2 lb. ground beef with mozzarella cheese.

Monday August 24: I ate a Cornish Hen that had to be cooked or it faced spoilage. I also ate a half of a Cornish hen that had been leftover from Friday. I was briefly content. On the way to work I ate approximately 2 oz. of whole sunflower seeds. I consumed 8 oz. of salami from 9Pm to 11:30PM. At about 1:30 AM I ate three chicken thighs, a large spring Mix salad with two hard boiled eggs, bacon (approximately 3 oz.) oil and vinegar.

Tuesday August 25: I ate approximately 1.25 lb. ground beef with two pieces of mozzarella cheese at about 1 PM. On the way to work I ate approximately 2 oz. of whole sunflower seeds. Ate three chicken thighs at about 9PM. Took 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix shortly after midnight.

Wednesday August 26: Gym day. I took 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix before going to gym. Ate 24 oz Hebrew national all beef franks at about 1 PM. At work I was treated to a Honduran dinner, so I went off diet. It was good! As I have mentioned before, I don't want to be on a high protein diet forever. At 200 lb., I hope to move on. We miss out on so much, as luxurious as a high protein diet might seem. Also, carbs seem to taste even better if you are carb-deprived.
Dinner consisted of two seasoned chicken thighs and rice. Because I had gone off diet I also ate a couple of nectarines after dinner. I ate two porkk chops before going to bed.

Thursday August 27: I woke up with hangover symptoms even though I had not a drop of alcohol for several days. This happens fairly often. I wake up with a slight headache and slight nausea and I cannot trace it to anything in particular. I sometimes think I have this problem figured out and I'll go a couple of weeks without a problem and then I'll wake up feeling sick. Then I immediately do a mental review of all that I have consumed for the past day or so and rate the possibility of food infection. Not sure what it is this time. Hope it's not that damn killer flu I keep hearing about.
I will skip breakfast and lunch today. I will drink black coffee and chew on ginger root. Ginger is an excellent natural remedy btw. It's a shame that manufacturers usually substitute artificial flavors for ginger when they make ginger ale. For that reason I buy the ginger root from the produce section.
Wish me a hasty recovery.

I lost 15 pounds in 11 weeks. Of course I lost 16 pounds in 8 weeks so I have hit a rough spot. Note the spikes in weight when I consumed 50 or so grams of carbs in a day's time. That has happened like that in the past, too. Another factor in fluctuating weight is heat. We finally got summer in New England. A week of hot days. I drank a lot of water to compensate.

Note: I have now been 10 days without resveratrol. That is due to having a busy schedule. Hope to order this evening.

Computer Glitches

I tried upgrading the memory on my computer and it consumed most of the weekend. The story has a happy ending, fortunately. I bought a kit of 2x1 gb ddr2. I installed them and nada. The happy ending is that one of the sticks was defective but I refused to consider that possibility at first. After taking them back to Brand X, where there was a long line, I had the helpful tech guy test them and then I wnet back to customer service and finally I came home with a much faster machine.

But of course I have not posted since Thursday. So here goes. I returned to the gym on Thursday, the first time since July 26. Did a weight routine. Hope to get back there tomorrow.

Thursday: I ate 16 oz. of beef franks before leaving for work (About 1PM.) Also had a small amount of cheese and bacon with it. On the way to work 2PM to 3PM I ate about 3 oz. whole sunflower seeds. I ate 3 thick cut pork chops at 10PM. I consumed 6 tbsp. proprietary arginine mix before going to bed. Coffee in AM and one cup around 5PM.

Friday: I ate approximately 1.5 lb shrimp with a half stick of butter at about 1PM. I ate about 2 oz. of whole sunflower seeds on the way to work. At work I ate two cups of popcorn and about half a brownie. Sigh. I then consumed 8 oz. of packaged salami. I consumed 6 ox. proprietary arginine mix around midnight. At about 2 AM I ate a Spring Mix salad with ranch dressing, 1/2 Cornish Hen and approximately 6 oz. almonds. Coffee in AM and a few cups in the early PM.

Saturday: Ate 16 oz. beef franks around noon. Consumed 6 tbsp. of proprietary arginine mix at about 5 PM. Ate approximately 1.5 lb. shrimp with butter late at night. Drank a lot of coffee, more than usual throughout day.

Sunday: So far I have eaten about a pound of shrimp with butter at 2PM. Consumed 6 tbsp. of proprietary arginine mix at about 5 PM.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

Monday: I ate leftover fried chicken breast (lightly breaded) around 12:30 PM after enjoying my AM coffee. I had some Half-N-Half with my coffee. On the way to work I ate approximately 2 oz. of whole sunflower seeds. At work I ate perhaps another lb. of the leftover chicken breast. I used a small amount of salsa as a relish. At home I ate .98 lb. ground lamb with two slices of cheese. Finished off the remaining gin (about four ounces.)

Tuesday: I drank my coffee with Half-N-Half. Ate approximately 1.2 lb. ground beef with two slices of mozarella cheese at about 12:30 PM. I ate approximately 2 oz. sunflower seeds on way to work. Ate a whole leg of chicken at work. Upon returning home (around midnight) I ate one more lg of chicken and two leftover legs from Cornish Hen.

Wednesday: I ate three thick cut pork chops at about 12:30 PM. Drank coffee with a small amount of Half-N-Half. Ate approximately 2 oz. whole sunflower seeds on way to work. At work I helped myself to some peanut butter and praline fudge my boss gave to me. Mmmmmm. I don't miss a lot of off-diet stuff but this was heavenly, especially the praline. WAY OFF DIET! Ate 2 whole chicken legs at work. since I had already exceeded my carb level I went ahead and gobbled down 4 oz. of Fritos and a banana. Shortly after I post this I will eat another two thickly cut pork chops.

Why Twitter?

Being a trendy guy I just had to taste th Twitter soup. After two months I am asking myself, "why?" When all is said and done, Twitter might be remembered as the pet rock of cyberspace. A trend as stupid and as short-lived as the Cabbage Patch Dolls.

For whatever reason I used Twitter to post my meal log. But at 140 characters I often abbreviated in a way that did not make sense. Chx thghs for chicken thighs. .5&.5 instead of Half-N-Half. Approx for approximately. Welcome back, Queen's English.

Friday August 14. I enjoyed cold, black coffee. Before leaving for work I ate 24 oz. (precooked weight) of frankfurters (Hebrew National if they want to give me a kickback.) I later cooked a meal loaf using 1+ lb of ground beef, salsa, bread crumbs and oatmeal. Not real low carb but probably not more than the carbs in two slices of bread. The meat was going to go bad so I had to eat it that night...I consumed about 36oz. arginie in a propietary mix upon returning home. As a nightcap I had a taste of gin, 5 eggs, and I estimate 4 oz of previously-cooked bacon.

Saturday August 15. I got called to work unexpectedly and my cubbard was bare. Ate .8 oz. Salami on the way to work and topped it off with approximately 4 oz. pecans and two Atkins bars. Despite the name, Atkins bars are not really all that low-carb and they can wreck a diet. But I was hungry and the cubbard was bare. I ate another 8 oz. salami around 9PM. Upon arriving home I consumed the same propietary arginine mix, about 36 grams of arginine. Later i ate approximately 8 oz. of precooked bacon.

Sunday August 16: Drank coffee with Half-N-Half then had 6 tablespoons of proprietary arginine mix (36 grams estimate.) Fianlly ate around 5:30 PM. Small salad and 1.35 lb. haddock lightly breaded in flower and fried in bacon grease. Nibbled on lightly breaded chicken fingers that I had cooked. Just took a taste of gin and I have a Cornish Hen in the oven (12:42 AM August 17.)

Ahh, the Queen's English.

On Changing Taste or Just Eat The Apple

Because I don't eat a lot of sugar, sweet things taste sweeter to me. Because I am not always drenching my taste buds in fructose, sucrose, etc. my sense of taste has changed, if not improved. On Monday I ate an apple. Sorry to say that I inadvertently left it off my tweets, but that is another matter for another time.

The apple was possibly the best apple I have ever eaten. It was from New Zealand. It had a micro sticker on it that said "Jazz." It was reddish/yellowish autumn color. It was big and slightly crunchy. That was one damn fine apple.

How much of my epicurean delight was attributable to the flavor of the apple and how much was attributable to my changing taste is hard to say. But because I do eat candy and doughnuts and ice cream, my taste for sweetness has been sharpened. I enjoy a good apple as much as I once enjoyed a cherry cheesecake. Salads are something I look forward to as much as I once looked forward to Hagen Daz. I don't miss the mega-doses of sugar.

Yes, I do look forward to that day when i can enjoy starches and desserts in moderation. But that's at least 40 pounds from now. In the meantime, I am usually content. If I eat sufficient protein, I do not crave coffee rolls and pastries and and things that melt in the mouth. But I am thinking about that next killer apple.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Falling Off The Wagon

One of the keys of a high protein diet is ensuring that one does not get hungry. For it is when we get hungry that we go carb crazy. I did this on Tuesday. I don't really eat breakfast as such. I don't really eat meals as such. I eat a large serving of protein early in the day, eat a smaller sized protein snack/meal around 5 or 6 and then eat another large serving of protein shortly after arriving home. Usually this last meal is at 1 AM.

On Tuesday I did not eat enough protein (.98 lb ground lamb with cheese) before leaving for work. At work I ate 8 oz. of salami and a diet drink. I also had a couple of pieces of fried chicken breast (approximately 4 oz.) I went easy on the chicken because it was breaded.

Later, when brownies were served, I just could not stop. I ate four of them. I felt guilty but when I fall off diet I try to eat something else, I normally cannot eat, since the diet is shot anyway. So I ate a green apple. It was bland. I drank a little gin when I came home and had a few extra pecans. Try again tomorrow.

I think if I had eaten a pound and a half of lamb instead of .98 pound, I would not have eaten four brownies later in the day.

Today is much more successful. I ate two thick cut pork chops for breakfast, 2 chicken thighs for dinner and I will have a salad with ground lamb and a taste of gin shortly after posting this.

Yesterday I weighed 248 lb. I don't know why one retains so much water after eating carbs following a long period of almost abstinence. But it seems to work that way. Monday I weighed 240 and today I weigh 241. Go figure.

Overview of Weight Loss: First 9 Weeks.

On June 8 of this year I did something I have done repeatedly for almost two decades. I launched yet another weight loss effort. It was going to be different this time. This was it! Losing and sustained loss.

How have I done? I have lost 16 lb. in 63 days. Of course, I lost 16 lb. in 56 days. So I flatlined this past week. But I would rather focus on the success of the first 56 days and think that maybe I have set myself up for more weight loss in the coming week.

A quick review in pounds:

1. June 8....256

2. June 14...250

3. June 20...249

4. June 21...248

5. June 27...249

6. June 28...250

7. July 1....249

8. July 15...246

9. July 20...245

10. July 22..244

11. July 26..243

12. July 31..245

13. August 3..240

14. August 5..242

15. August 9..240

Recapping the weight loss strategy:
1. Carbohydrate restriction. My strategy might be called modified Atkins or maybe haphazard Atkins. As mentioned in previous posts I have had varying degrees of success with Atkins. It worked real well one year. I went off it and gained excessive weight. Restarted it the next year and did not follow it as closely and was not as successful. Also, I have always gone through flatline periods, especially when I am in the 240-250 range.

Believe it or not, I have cut back on fat a little bit. My diet used to look like an inverted USDA food pyramid (one of the biggest flops in the history of the world)with fat from calories as the base. Now, protein would probably be the base. I no longer smother swordfish in butter and I frequently substitute tabasco sauce or mustard for mayo. But don't ever ask me to substitute low fat or lite mayo. I am 100%against the Ersatz Food movement that robs souls and ruins lives! Besides, low fat products usually have a higher sugar content than the real thing.

2. Second strategem is exercise. I do want to go to the gym more frequently but my time constraints are real. Having said that, I have only attended the gym 7 or 8 times(I believe it's 8 but I will double check) during this 63 day period. No doubt I would lose weight faster if I had the luxury of liesure.

3. Third strategem is phenylalanine. I have been using phenylalanine daily for 20 years. In and of itself, it has not been successful in weight control but I do believe it has merit. More on this amazing amino in future posts.

4. Fourth strategem is arginine. Arginine can be a cornerstone of weight loss but it has a few flaws. The big flaw of arginine is its taste. Years ago someone compared its taste to dog vomit. I cannot make that comparison but I will say that arginine is one of the worst tasting substances I have ever swallowed. For that reason I started buying the more expensive proprietary mixes during the early 90's. What a difference!
But most arginine products were sweetened with sugar. Not a problem until I started a low carb diet. Fortunately, there are proprietary arginine products that use stevia as a sweetener. But I cannot say for certain how stevia affects low-carb diets. There is this gray area of sugar alcohols, virtual carbs, actual carbs and so on. A small amount of stevia will not sabotage a low-carb diet. A high intake might sabotage the diet.
This is an area of frustration for me. It is one of those things where it is hard to find reliable information. Ask a doctor and he'll tell you that a low-carb diet is dangerous and it never, ever, ever works. Also stevia is probably poison. Take two pyramids and call me in the morning. Of course, I don't trust the proprietor to tell me if and when stevia might sabotage my weight loss efforts. Joe Internet will offer an opinion on the subject but I sometimes think Mr. Internet is not as smart as he thinks he is.
Arginine has a lot to offer but the stevia continues to concern me. I sometimes use arginine as a meal substitute but only if I am not all that hungry. From July 4 to July 25 I used arginine in lower doses (3 tbsp/6 gram arginine per tbsp)a couple of times before bed and each time before exercise. I started arginine the week of July 20. Usually 6 tbsp. daily (one x per day.) Through oversight I abstained for three days in the first week in August.
The stevia thing has not been resolved but at this writing I am taking arginine 6 tbsp. daily.

5. Fifth Strategam is resveratrol. On Wednsesday July 29 I took 400 mg. resveratrol
one x. The next day I took 400 mg tid. The following day I settled into a routine of 400 mg bid. On August 6 I increased resveratrol to 800 mg. bid.
Despite the immediate weight loss (5 lb. in 3 days) I am still skeptical of resveratrol. The weight loss could have been coincidental. We get those peaks and valleys in every weight loss (and weight gain for that matter) scenario. Even at wholesale prices, resveratrol is pricey. But it would certainly be money well spent if one was certain their body was assimilating the ingested resveratrol. However, bioavailabilty is certainly a concern. But for now, I will include resveratrol.

That is my First 9 Week Summary. If anyone has any suggestions, good advice, bad advice or ridicule, please pass it along.

On The Health Benefits of Obesity

Few things in life are all good or all bad. However, our public discourse does not reflect balanced assessments. The primary media bias is the bias for simplicity. We can argue whether this bias reflects humanity's bias for simplicity or that it proves that people in the press are mostly simpletons. But for whatever reason, the media hold a bias for simplicity.

While this editor was unable to find any advantages to bulimia (we will try again in the future) he was able to find advantages to obesity. Exhibit A: A high BMI is associated with improved survival. "Weight-gaining interventional studies in dialysis patients are urgently needed to ascertain whether they can improve survival and quality of life."

http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/81/3/543

And if you're bothered by that pesky hypoxia, remember this: "We found that high-fat diet-fed (HFD) mice recovered from acute hypoxia 5 times faster than normal-diet-fed (ND) mice." Yeah baby. You go, fat mouse! Sis boom bah! Outsurvive the skinny mouse! Outsurvive the skinny mouse! Outsurvive the skinny mouse!

http://endo.endojournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/150/6/2660

This study is complex but has a few intriguing facets. "However, until we fully understand the physiology of uraemic fat, and especially the causes of the accelerated mortality in CKD, it is hard to exclude that adipose tissue may indeed also exert beneficial effects in patients with CKD."

http://ndt.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/23/10/3041

Finally, I offer my own non-clinical observation. Obese people develop amazing lower body strength. It is hard to replicate an exercise of carrying around extra pounds under the skin 24/7. Your fat makes your legs strong. If you are obese or formerly obese, test this hypothesis. Go down to the gym and hit the leg press or the squat bar. I bet you put the marathoner to shame. And you will retain that stregth even if you shed some tonnage. It is possible that the formerly obese will be shown to be healthier than the never obese. I hope so.

Why I am Dubious About Colon-Cleansing Products

1. I'm not sure it is a good idea to purge one's colon of its "spackle and paste." That bacteria is performing a useful function. It is keeping you alive.

2. Those advertised products cannot possibly work as well as phospho-soda are any of the other products one takes the night before a colonoscopy. If you ingest phospho-soda you will have to stay close to a toilet for the duration of the evening.

3. When I had my only colonoscopy I did not lose 10-15 pounds. My weight was about the same the next time I weighed myself a few days later.

If you feel the need to cleanse your colon, then why not schedule a colonoscopy? That way, a trained professional will be able to observe any abnormalities and your colon will be cleaned in the process.

But if you don't want to go through all that hassle (and I don't blame you if you don't)you might try a high colonic. Howard Stern does it, so I am told.
