A Note on Why I Started Consuming More Calories And Started Sleeping So Much Better.

On Thursday, August 19, I consumed an estimated 2258 calories and then slept for about 7 hours. The next day, I felt more energetic and I probably possessed more mental clarity than I had in the recent past. I experienced brief waves of euphoria throughout the day.

On Friday, August 20, I consumed approximately 2,380 calories and slept for about 8 hours.

On Saturday, August 21, I consumed approximately 3,000 calories and slept for slightly more than 8 hours.

On each of those three evenings, I did not get up even once during the night. Suppression of the urge to urinate is characteristic of deep, efficient end productive sleep.

Maybe I should keep a sleep log as well as a food log and weight log. I am aware that premature waking is associated with both low calorie and low carbohydrate diets. It had gotten much worse than expected after starting The Last Weight Loss Diet. 

Please note that I discontinued a high protein diet in 2020 because I was waking up at 4 AM and could not always get back to sleep.

We are all familiar with the short-term symptoms of hunger:

1. Feeling of emptiness in stomach

2. Stomach growling or gurgling. 

3. Dizziness, faintness or light-headedness

4. Headache.

5. Irritability, agitation.

6. Lack of concentration.

7. In some people, nausea.

The short term-term symptoms (I hope that's not too strong of a description but if you are really hungry, it's a symptom, man, you got a problem with that!) are easy to avoid. Practicioners of OMAD, intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting learn techniques to sidestep these discomforts. Deep hunger is a different matter.

Deep hunger comes from prolonged caloric restriction. How prolonged? Maybe after a few days. For others, maybe a few weeks. 

What are the symptoms?

1 Insomnia usually characterized by frequent waking or the inability to fall back to sleep upon premature waking.

2. Fatigue or slightly less than normal energy.

3. Dulling of mood or even depression.

Good health has its price. It might be hard to accept that our bodies are programmed for weight gain and anything that disrupts weight gain, results in discomfort. Call it the price we pay for our ancestors surviving The Ice Age.

The challenges I face at this time: 

1 Restore or replenish my vigor and overall good feeling.

2 Try to either lose weight or maintain my weight during this temporary calorie increase.

3. To recommit to the weight loss, sooner rather than later.

Cookout: In anticipation on Tropical Storm Henri's imminent arrival, and in an effort to use up our charcoal briquets and fuel and to enjoy one of the few days of good summer weather 2021 has provided, we opted for a Saturday cookout.

In the process, I might have found a method to create the perfect charcoal fire. Remind me to make a video.

Around 7 PM I started the nibblefest that would conclude around midnight. I ate broiled veggies; broccoli, celery, cauliflower, and carrots. I ate 4 beef franks on buns, two large cheeseburgers with lettuce and mayonnaise, 2 oz, of gin with a splash of lemon juice and a large slice of chocolate marble cake.

I picked up an extra shift at work. Usually, I work 10 AM to 8 PM. On this day, I worked from 3-11 PM.

This allowed me to sleep slightly more than seven hours. As mentioned elsewhere, I felt unusually energetic, clear-headed and at times, euphoric.

Because I worked until 11 PM I sampled some of the workplace goodies bestowed by our company's providers. We receive a lot of high-calorie swag that I usually eschew. Tonight, I ate half of a pastry @ 9:45 that technically constituted a meal. (Estimated 200 calories)

In addition to the 9:45 PM meal...Around 11:45 PM:

Diet Holiday Summary

I took a diet holiday for three reasons. One, we had a bounty of fattening foods. My wife procured food that is not on any weight loss plan. She and I never follow the same diet for any length of time. Wife does a good job of keeping the freezer stocked and product rotation. We have both taken a few measures to reduce our food budget and to guard against short-term disaster.

Our safeguards against hard times have been minimal. We have yet to purchase survival foods, we do not own a generator and we do not own serious weapons. We do keep ten gallons of tap water, a bounty of paper supplies and of course, we keep the freezer packed. 

There is an unusual business in our town. The proprietor purchases breads and produce that have expired. When purchasing from this venturing capitalist we visually inspect the cargo before and after purchase. Truthfully, some of of our cornucopia ends up on the compost heap. The bulk of our purchases goes into the freezer and is later enjoyed without ill effect. 

The second reason for taking a diet holiday is that I had the week off from work. My benefit package is not great but I do receive six weeks vacation. Yes, I would like to take a real vacation but in the COVID era that is not so appealing. My Paid Time Off (PTO) is capped at 305 hours., so I take a week or two here and there and enjoy a staycation. The break in routine is sometimes highlighted by cookouts or restaurant adventures, so I like to stay culinarily flexible. 

The third reason that I went off diet is that Iran low on a key dietary supplement that is the cornerstone of my weight loss plan. It was bad planning on my part. Fortunately, I was only briefly without product. I consume the magic twice a day. I ran out of the good stuff on Saturday morning and I replenished on Sunday evening. I missed the Saturday PM and Sunday AM doses.

I experienced a net gain of 3 pounds over 8 days but at one point, I was 5 pounds heavier. Those are disturbing developments given that I continued intermittent fasting throughout the week and was mostly compliant with OMAD. As well, I only missed 2 doses of the magic drops. Do these developments portend a weight gain whenever I return to an ad lib diet? I sure hope not.

I officially went back on the weight loss diet on Tuesday, August 11.

A snackfest consisting of 33 and 1/2 Bing cherries (I gave a half of a cherry to a rodent friend),

 followed by the bottom of the bag of pretzels (Equivalent of 10 stick estimate)

followed by 10 freeze pops. and a bag of microwave popcorn.

Note: the dangers of snacking are illustrated here. I did not set out to eat 10 freeze pops. I consumed 2 and then 2 more and then I decided on eating the last bag of microwave popcorn left in the cabinet. Then  I ate more freeze pops, resulting in 10 (each about 100 calories.)

Is this an idiosyncratic weakness or something more universal? I crave sweet. I consume sweet and then I crave salt. I consume salt and then I cave sweet...food manufacturers understand the yin and yang of salt and sugar. We would all be better off if we recognized the relationship.


Around 9:30 PM:

Delicious beef steak prepared by my wife. She broiled two steaks purchased from two different stores. They were seasoned the same and I could not tell the difference between the two cuts. Estimated one pound of beef.
