Restarting Diet

December 14, 2014....252 lb. Day Zero

December 15 2014.....252 lb. Day 1

Thanksgiving put the diet out of commission for almost three weeks. I am not one to waste food and we still have about a week's supply in freezer. Turkey, dressing, baked ziti, so much more.

I ballooned up about 8 lb. I started a gym membership and worked out a few times. That might have prevented more drastic weight gain.

Food Log: Days 22 Through 24

Day 22

I had an unavoidable lunch meeting and it would have been awkward to bring my own food. The meeting would be held at a Salvadorean restaurant. I love Spanish food and I am also of the firm belief that it is like pizza, hamburgers and breakfast cuisine in that it is almost never a bad experience. Even when it's not very good, it's still pretty good. This lunch would be an exception to that rule. Ugghhh.

I ordered steak and eggs with beans and rice. (Carne juevos?)  Actually, the food was so-so with a few high points but the entire restaurant, including the Men's room, was filthy. Of course I was hungry, a side effect of this low calorie diet, so I cleaned my plate.

Later that night I was treated to spaghetti and meat balls. Way off diet. Good.

Day 23  I was unable to get back on-diet due mostly to poor planning on my part. I ate Chicken ala king with mashed potatoes for dinner. Way off-diet so I tried to keep portions small.

Day 24 More poor planning and I ended up eating leftovers from refrigerator. Nothing low fat or low calorie there.

According to the scales, I put on 3 lb. in 3 days. The dreaded rebound effect. In the past I gained 18 pounds in 38 days after coming off this diet. I plan to recommit to diet as well as figure out a moderated diet when this low calorie thing is discontinued.

Day 11 Food Log

Note: Road trip to casino today. I am not a big gambler but a lady I share a lot with likes slot machines. I will never understand their appeal but that's another story for another time. I was on guard to keep from getting ravenously hungry but I felt like I needed more protein and calories to stay alert and energized, especially when driving.

Black coffee, apple.
Approximately 4 oz. 96% lean ground beef, approximately 6 oz. shrimp (This exceeds recommended diet but I wanted to be awake and alert while driving.)

22 Pretzels eaten on ride. (According to Schulz's, each one of their stick pretzels contains 10 calories. I love pretzels and hope to salute the world's most underrated food here some day. But they are calorie bombs. Three pretzel sticks equal two Lifesavers. A bag of pretzels is over 1k calories.)

Consumed at casino: Italian sub and Diet Pepsi...both off-diet.

Apple on ride home. More pretzels on ride home.

Approximately 2 cups of yogurt, 6 oz. blueberries.

Weight at end of day: 248 lb. That has to be water weight because I did not consume 3 lb. of food.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Keeping a food log is like keeping a dream journal. If you don't write it down right away, the memory fades. That is how it is for me anyway.

So two days later I am trying to recall what else I ate on Friday.

I must have eaten an apple because I bought more than I should have and they are getting a bit soft.

I also ate a about a cup of yogurt and six ounces of blackberries.

I also ate approximately six ounces of shrimp.

Weighs 253 Lb

Slowly...very slowly.

Monday, August 11, 2014

Weighs 254 LB

Took me a week to lose that pound. Completely out of HCG drops. High protein diet. Ketone strips register positive almost always and yet, less than impressive results.

Sunday, August 3, 2014

Weighs 255 Lb.

8 days without weight loss. A plateau five lb. into the diet. I have been reading ketone strips all along and according to them I am usually in a state of small ketosis. So why no weight loss?

Sunday, July 27, 2014

Weighs 255 Lb.

Was 255 yesterday, July 26.

High protein and more or less sporadic HCG drops. Want to halt HCG and just do high protein till I hit plateau.

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Diet Started July 19, 2014

Weighed 260 lb. on Saturday.

Taking HCG drops 2xday. High protein diet. Use ketone strips 1x or 2x every day.

Sort of a hybrid diet at this point.

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Weighs 260 lb.

I seem to have peaked on the weight gain. 260 lb. The colonoscopy went, well more about that later.

I had a function to attend the weekend after the colonoscopy. We did most of the catering (big mistake) and as a result I ate a lot of rich, fatty food leading up to the function, ate well at said function and of course there were leftovers. Rich, fatty meatballs and Italian sausage with peppers and onions and a lot of homemade sauce. I even bought a new microwave. What a week!

I will soon be starting a new diet. Still putting the final touches on this baby. I'll roll it out soon.

Stay tuned.

Sunday, July 6, 2014

Weighs 263 lb.

Colonoscopy tomorrow. Prep this afternoon and evening. Wish me well.

Friday, June 27, 2014

Weighs 258 Lb

I continue to put on weight but no longer at the .6 lb/day clip. Still trying to hold off on a strict diet until after the colonoscopy on July 7.

I chatted with the nice lady from my doctor's office. Her name is Karen and I am not sure what she is exactly but she used to be an EMT. Someone suggested that I inquire about my thyroid. I had blood work performed about a month ago and thyroid was normal.

After a series of questions she suggested that I stop eating late at night. I have been round and round on this particular issue but I am willing to give it a try when I finally resort to another diet.

Friday, June 13, 2014

Weighs 255 Lb.

I put on 20 Lb. in 32 days. That is about .60 lb/day. I have not been gluttonous but I have not been on a diet either. I usually do put on weight rapidly if I am not on extreme diet.

To reiterate, I am not dieting until after I my July 7 colonoscopy. By that time I should weigh 270 lb.

Friday, May 30, 2014

Weighs 245 Lb.

I want to stay at this weight until after the colonoscopy in July. It is hard for me to even stay even. Wish me well.

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Weighs 242 Lb.

No diet in particular. Trying to avoid gluttony and extreme calories. I will formulate a new strategy in July following my colonoscopy.

Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Weighs 240 lb.

Still recovering from recent illness. I would take ten gangrenous gall bladders to one obstructed bowel.

Monday, May 12, 2014

Weighs 235 lb.

Still not feeling one hundred per cent but I am making a steady recovery and I am keeping the wight down.

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Weighs 239 Lb.

I had a bowel obstruction that lasted six days. It was the most physically agonizing experience of my life. It was brought on by too little food (HCG diet) coupled with too little water AND too many whole sunflower seeds. I thought I could continue munching whole sunflower seeds as I did when I was on a normal diet. Sunflower seeds became a much larger portion of my diet and I caused my bowel to get obstructed.

Day three post recovery and I still have symptoms and my appetite has not fully returned. Which is OK because the silver lining to this story is that I got my weight under 240 once more.

Saturday, April 26, 2014

245 Lb.

Day 3 of HCG. I am taking the drops without dieting. I will go low cal soon but right now I have too much fatty food in my fridge that I am not throwing out.

HCG does seem to reduce appetite. No urge to snack all day and that is unusual for me.

Thursday, April 24, 2014

252 Lb.

In 38 days I put on 18 lb.

I submit that I was not gluttonous, at least by my standards. There was my birthday, a trip to New York and good Italian cuisine and there was Easter and post-Easter and so on. The plan was to go high protein for a while but I kept getting thrown off course by well-meaning people who happen to be good cooks and who happen to patronize good bakers and who purchase precious potent potables.

I purchased HCG drops at Rite-Aid. In previous posts I referred to HCG as substance X because it is still controversial. The Feds sent Kevin Trudeau to jail for advocating its usage, so I was surprised to see it on the shelves of a retail grocery store. The FDA does not usually harass individuals but if they know people are claiming benefit from a supplement, they are more likely to try to ban it. Ironic perhaps. If people like it and report beneficial properties, the Feds are more likely to pull it from the shelves. It's the world we live in.

I still have a lot of fatty foods in the fridge but I started the HCG drops today. Plan to use HCG b.i.d @ noon and midnight. Hope to get on a 500-1000 calorie/day diet this weekend.

235 lb

I have never really kick started the high protein diet since last post. That was the plan.

It is so easy to get thrown off with high protein. It started when I was coming down with a cold and started woofing down Cold-Eaze. They make sugarless cough drops but I have not seen sugarless Cold-Eaze.

The Cold-Eaze seemed to ease my oncoming cold, BTW.

As mentioned before, high protein diets are different from other diets. You have to stay on the diet for several days if not several weeks in order to lose weight. Get a little bit off-diet and it can take at least two or three days until ketosis starts anew. Every few days there has been a carb interruption. No weight loss.

I am grateful that I could sustain my weight, however. No ballooning this time.

Stay tuned.

Food Log: Week 2 High Protein Diet

Saturday February 1: Off-diet. Went to Foxwoods and ate the buffet. I don't eat like I used to. Seriously. Time was when I would have filled my plates a half dozen or so times, sampled the soup and salad bar and then started on dessert. This time, I hit the bar-b-q bar, the seafood bar and the desserts.
Earlier in the day I sampled a Japanese cheesecake. It was good but I prefer American cheese cake.

Ate everything off-diet in fridge upon return home.

Sunday February 2: At about 4:30 PM I ate 1.72 oz. swordfish with butter and Mrs. Dash. It was on sale @ 5.99/lb. It was good but not as delicious as usual. Not sure why. Ate approximately ten radishes.

Around midnight I ate a generous serving of corned beef with cabbage and a small amount of carrots.

Monday February 3 : Approximately 1.25 lb. hamburger with Monterey Jack cheese. Small amount of spicy ketchup.

Approximately 1/2 lb ham with small amount of broccoli.

Generous serving of corned beef with cabbage and a small amount of carrots.

Tuesday February 4: Approximately 1.25 lb. hamburger with Monterey Jack cheese. small amount of green hot sauce, minute dose of spicy ketchup.

Approximately 2 oz. whole sunflower seeds.

8 oz. salami and some whole sunflower seeds.

Insomnia

I have experienced intermittent insomnia since starting and restarting X Diet. The night before last (Sunday into Monday) I awoke after about two hours of sleep and tossed and turned for the next few hours I tossed and turned and maybe got another half hour of sleep.

Last night I added 5 HTP (Tryptophan) to my regimen of 6 mg. melatonin and 50 mg. diphenhydramine. I slept much better.

The Return Of Hoodia

Hoodia was the dietary craze of the past decade. It came and went quickly. I liked it. It eased hunger without any noticeable side effects. As we all know diets and supplements can be very trendy. Even good diets and good supplements can fade away without much fanfare.

A few weeks ago I walked into a GNC in search of hoodia. Neither salesperson had eve heard of it. I ended up ordering Hoodia from Beyond A Century.

I took 250 mg. hoodia twice today and it has made all the difference in the world. No food fixation today. Relief at last!

Onward!

Fat Chick Falling Off Of a Trampoline

Initial Experiments With Garcinia Cambogia

Who got to name that vegetable? Anyway, I bought some gc at GNC for roughly sixty cents per unit. The flavor is good, reminiscent of Starbursts. I was told one/day would suppress hunger and help me metabolize fat. I figured I would do that as I dc'd the X diet.

Whatever gc was supposed to do, it did not do all that well. Granted, I was in holiday feeding frenzy mode but 18 lb. in 11days? Maybe I should go back and read the label.

Food Journal Week 1 (Part II)

January 2, 2014

Apple

8 oz. Bumble Bee Spicy Thai tuna, spinach, pea sprouts, tomato
(8 oz. is over the limit but I am easing back into the diet.)

Orange

4 oz. Bumble Bee Spicy Thai tuna

Small--extremely small serving--of strawberry shortcake and sweetened whipped cream. It was so good I then had a regular-sized serving.

Apple

Salad--baby spinach, onion, tomato, celery sans dressing, approximately 1.5 cups of plain low fat yogurt (they were out of no-fat yogurt when I went shopping) with approximately 3 oz. blueberries. Again, this is not exactly keeping with the diet but I am easing back into it.

January 3, 2014

Orange

5.2 oz. lemon pepper tuna (Two Starkist pouches) celery

Approximately 3.5 oz. whole sunflower seeds (Off diet but I ate them anyway)

Apple

Approximately 5 oz. shrimp, 1 lb. radishes.

(Same as last night.)

January 4, 2014

Orange

Approximately 5 oz. chicken breast marinated in lime juice, Mrs. Dash. Salad--baby spinach, onion, tomato, celery sans dressing.

Apple

Orange

Teaspoon of Nutella (never had it before) 5 oz. shrimp, celery. I tried this calorie free peanut spread. Walden Farms Whipped Peanut Spread (More about that later)

Apple

Approximately 1.5 cup plain no fat yogurt with 6 oz. blackberries.

5 oz. shrimp shortly before bedtime.

Note: I exceeded diet guidelines by about 400 calories. Still, I was focused on food all day. When I am hungry I talk about food incessantly and visit recipe sites (Let's skip over the Freudian parallels for now.) I craved fat, salty foods all day. I even with food shopping even though our cupboard was not even close to bare. Given my recent success (9 lb. in 5 days) I might try to increase my caloric intake by about 50%. I will also try to increase my intake of H2O, something I did diligently when I started this diet on November 29. Excess water will reduce some hunger pangs.

January 5, 2014

Orange

Approximately 5 oz. chicken breast marinated in lime juice, Mrs. Dash. Celery. Almost a whole lb. radishes, a few roasted Brussels sprouts.

Apple

1 quart of Stonyfield Farm Rich and Creamy yogurt and 12 oz. blackberries. So much for will power. But as of this writing (about an hour after eating) I am NOT hungry...Actually I consumed the yogurt and berries in two installments about an hour apart.

Banana

Orange

Approximately 5 oz. chicken breast marinated in lime juice, Mrs. Dash.  The remaining few radishes left over from earlier, one tomato.

January 6, 2014

Orange

Approximately 8 oz. chicken breast marinated in lime juice, Mrs. Dash. Approximately 8 oz. spiced potatoes I found in refrigerator. Comment: Something had to give. I was not going to be hungry and constantly food-obsessed for another day. I would take a cheat day. The potatoes were good! I would later ease my hunger with hoodia.

HOODIA!
Apple

Approximately 5 oz. shrimp, roughly 1/2 lb. radishes.

Banana
Approximately 5 oz. shrimp.

January 8, 2014

Cup of whole milk, banana.

Orange.

Approximately 5 oz. shrimp. 1 cup of whole milk. Approximately 1 cup of plain nonfat yogurt. (See note about milk and not wasting food. I had to go to the auto mechanic early and by lunchtime I was hungry. Not exactly a splurge but still more calories than recommended for diet.)

HOODIA immediately after lunch.

More HOODIA
2 servings of flounder stuffed with crab, spinach with feta cheese, rice. (Vile temptress! I could have stayed on diet but stuffed flounder...and it was GREAT!)

Back On Diet...Sort Of

January 2, 2014

I weigh 246 lb. I put on 16 lb. in 12 days. Actually, the scale hit as high as 248. 18 lb. in 11 days.

I enjoyed the holidays but I got to get back on track. Anytime you put on more than a pound a day, you have to take countermeasures. So this AM I restarted the X diet.

To review. On November 29 I weighed 245 lb. On December 23 I weighed 231 lb. On January 2 I weigh 246.

In addition to the obvious joys of food and drink I felt great for the past 12 days. When I was losing weight, I was fatigued, I was frequently hungry, I was mentally dull, I was a bit cranky and I had trouble sleeping. Good health comes at a price.

Oh yes, and I was cold. I handle cold weather better than most people but when I was losing weight I could not get comfortable. Not enough blankets on my bed. I went from sleeping in briefs to sleeping in sweat pants, sweat shirt and winter socks.

I went off diet and this morning I bounded around the 64 degree house in my briefs and I was comfortable. And for a week and a half I would go to bed and fall asleep within minutes and awaken seven or eight hours later in a cozy, comfortable state. That will be coming to an end, I am afraid.

Let the good times roll!
